This amazing discovery was first brought to the marine science department at Florida Keys Community College, before being taken to the Michigan University for further analysis.

Professor Wagner and his fellow boffins used MRI scans to reveal the shark not only had two distinct heads, but also had two hearts and twos stomachs, with the remainder of the body joining together by a single tail.

The Daily Telegraph reports the case was brought to the public’s attention after being publicised in the Journal of Fish Biology.

Environmental officials are investigating after huge swathes of the tiny red sea creatures washed up on a beach in Coronel, 330 miles south of Chile’s capital, Santiago.

Prosecutors say the bizarre incident could’ve been an environmental crime, and local fishermen say regional power firms for overheating the waters, endangering the lives of marine wildlife.

They had stopped the car for a routine check, near Kalamazoo, Michigan, when the driver told them he had a roadkill deer in the boot.

The motorist told officers he had accidentally hit and killed the deer with his car on a nearby road.

Michigan motorists who hit animals are allowed to keep the meat but must report the incident and acquire a state deer kill permit.

But it turned out the deer had been only stunned – and it jumped up and ran off into nearby woods when officers opened the boot.

Kalamazoo lieutenant Stacey Geik said: “It was a fun story, to maybe get a smile on people’s faces for a change.”

A member of the public was strolling through Uppsala in Sweden when they made the shock discovery. Officials are baffled as to how the animal got there.

‘A somewhat confused person called and said he was out walking in the woods where he had found a seal pup. I thought he was joking at first,’ said local policeman Henrik Pederson, according to The Metro.

The pup was released into a nearby river. Robert Sandefors, who made the discovery, said: “He must have gotten separated from his mother and gone in the wrong direction.”

United Airlines spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says the 6-year-old dog was traveling in cargo Thursday when the mix-up happened. When the error was realized, she says the airline took immediate steps to get Hendrix back to his owner.

Phoenix television station KNXV reports (http://bit.ly/YyMVte ) that the first word owner Meredith Grant got about the mix-up was in a phone call from the airline before Hendrix’s original flight was supposed to land in Phoenix.

Grant says she felt like someone punched her in the stomach after finding out her dog had been sent overseas.

Hendrix was returned, and the airline apologized and offered a full refund.

Steve Townson landed the wild arapaima – the world’s largest scaled freshwater fish – from Middle River Essequibo in Guyana.

Mr Townson, who travels the world catching exotic fish, used a 2lb piranha to catch the mighty fish, plus another weighing around 150lb.

“The Arapaima is one of the world’s biggest and mightiest freshwater fish and to catch them in the wild is a rare privilege,” he said.

“They are protected and cannot be removed by law for the table, but our partners in Guyana are working on strictly catch and release with the local Amerindians.

“The Arapaima is the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world, but they can be delicate and must be handled with care.

“The fish I caught were never removed from the water and swam away strongly to fight another day!”

Mr Townson runs UK-based company Amazon-Angler.com - a company specialising in South American angling holidays.

But they were rescued by a quick-thinking helicopter pilot.

The pilot flies over low to propel the deers across the ice to the shore. He was able to move the first deer, but the second deer was rescued by two men.

“We have worked hard to design the vest in a way that prevents the turtle from taking it off unwittingly,” he told AFP. “It can flutter the limbs as the vest is soft.”

The creature, which weighs 96 kilograms (212 pounds) and has a shell 82 centimetres (32 inches) long, was pulled out of a fisherman’s net and sent to the Suma Aqualife Park in mid-2008.

The aquarium started developing artificial limbs for the animal in late 2008 as it could swim only at about 60 per cent of its normal speed.

Earlier versions were squeezed into the stumps but were apparently painful to Yu. “Similar attempts have been made to attach artificial limbs to turtles around the world. But we have not heard if they went well,” said Kamezaki, an expert on sea turtles, whose surname coincidentally means “turtle cape” in Japanese.

“Ours may be the only case in which a turtle with artificial limbs is still swimming without a problem.”

Young Matthew was never in any danger as the big cat, called Kachifa, was behind plate glass.

But she was clearly fascinated in the boy and mirrored his every move during a ten minute staring contest.

Photographer Armando Sierra kept taking pictures as the lioness even bared her teeth and let out a huge roar.

At one point Kachifa even stood up on her hind legs, dwarfing the young boy, to get a better look at her visitor before bearing her large teeth again.

Armando said: “I try to go to the zoo every week with Matthew who enjoys looking at the lions as well as the chimps and the ducks.

“He likes to hear the lions growl and, since the females are very playful, he can just watch them interact.

“As we approached the glass the lioness immediately charged with aggression towards Matthew.

“She then started to scratch and claw at the glass as if wanting to play and she followed Matthew wherever he moved.

“She seemed to be analysing him and was waiting to see what his next move would be – she wasn’t interested at all in me.” Click for a photo series, DailyMail

Owner Len Lucero says Chris P Bacon was born with a congenital defect which means he has no use of his hind limbs. He has made him a two-wheeled harness out of a children’s K’Nex building set which he is using to get around.

Mr Lucero says the Walkin’ Wheels organisation which helps disabled pets has kindly donated him a “cool wheelchair”. But he added: “Chris weighs 2lbs so he is too small now but should grow into it before long. For now we’ll have to stick with K’Nex.”
