For the past 20 years Ansbro, from the town of Boyle, has been carrying out research on extraterrestrial intelligence. Ansbro gives presentations across the globe, including one to the French government.

Although his work might seem controversial and unusual he insists it is carried out “scientifically”. Ansbro’s work has been published by the European Space Agency and he works as a part of a group of scientists called OSETI (Optical Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence).

His recent work shows that alien space-crafts follow defined paths around the earth. In his hometown of Boyle Ansbro has set up an “all sky camera” to monitor the whole sky hemisphere around the clock. The camera which comprises of 11 cameras record anything that moves or is unusual. Ansbro, along with other scientists, has collated the data which suggests that space-crafts are circling the earth.

He explained “When you take all that data and apply it to this theory we have found that it fits with the computerized time graphs and that we can predict when future sightings will occur and we have found that it has happened in Boyle.” He refers to thema as “Identified Flying Objects” rather than UFOs.

Making comparisons to Roswell, New Mexico, he said “the tourism potential is huge.” he said, drawing comparisons with the UFO centre in Roswell New Mexico, which attracts huge numbers of visitors every year and also another UFO centre in Japan.

He told his local paper the Roscommon Herald, “We haven’t proven our discovery to the scientific community yet and don’t have the resources but we can show that extraterrestrial space craft are on specific orbital tracks around the earth.”

But the last thing Don Forrester expected when he returned to England was to be left close to death by a poisonous ­spider in Kentish Town.

After being bitten by a hungry, hairy-legged creature last week, the former Sunday Times journalist has warned residents to beware of a colony of tropical spiders that could be on the loose in Camden.

Mr Forrester, of Grafton Road, was laying decking for a friend in Islip Street last Wednesday when he felt a sudden pain in his hand, which he put down to a wood splinter.

Seconds later he saw two unusual-looking brown hairy spiders with yellow stripes on their backs scurrying across the garden.

But it was only when his hand swelled to five times its normal size that he realised he had become the creatures’ prey.

Mr Forrester said: “Within an hour my hand went from what I thought was a little splinter to looking like a balloon. It continued to get bigger for three days and the pain got so intense I thought I’d better do something about this.”

Mr Forrester sought the advice of a chemist who told him he needed antibiotics, but before the 62-year-old could see a doctor he took a turn for the worse while having a drink with friends in the Sir Robert Peel pub in Malden Road.

“I’d just got my pint when I just started to shake all over, my heart started to race and I started to come over all white,” said Mr Forrester. “The boys took one look at me and said they were going to get an ambulance. Without them I’d probably be dead.”

He was rushed to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead with dangerously low blood pressure and was later taken into theatre where doctors worked to remove the poison, which had already begun travelling up his arm. Mr Forrester’s condition was so serious he was kept in overnight and given antibiotics intravenously. He is now taking a cocktail of 11 tablets a day and has been advised to have physiotherapy to restore the movement in his arm.

But the ex-Fleet Street reporter is only too aware of how lucky he was to survive his ordeal.

“I’m a fit man – that’s the reason I was able to fight it off,” he said. “But if it had been an elderly or sick person without that level of resistance they might not have made it.”

Mr Forrester now plans to research the ­spider’s identity so he can warn other people what to look out for.

While talking to a male witness by phone, the investigator reported over hearing two female witnesses speak in the background describing the lights of the craft. He over heard them saying, “It’s trying to take off, it’s trying to lift!”

He also stated, “When I arrived to the area where the family was, I looked up on the mountain and there were three distinct glowing white lights coming from the area where the family reported seeing the craft; these could be seen on the side of the mountain. What puzzled me was that there are no homes or buildings on the side of that mountain. There is only a small shack used by military utility teams from the nearby base, which is visible during the day.”

The investigator also stated that upon his arrival he immediately began to videotape the event, at the time of this writing it is not known if still photos were taken.

He reported that 15-20 minutes after his arrival multiple unknown vehicles began to congregate on the mountain surrounding the crash site. And within minutes of their arrival he began to see through his camera viewfinder what was definitely a bright bluish-white light quite reminiscent of the output of an arc welder. His immediate thoughts were that the craft was being repaired to resume flight, or disassembled for removal from the area.

Odysseus – known to the ancient Romans as Ulysses – famously took 10 years to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy.

On his journey, he was twice shipwrecked and encountered a cyclops, the spirit of his mother and tempting Sirens before returning to Ithaca, where he found his wife, Penelope, under pressure to remarry from a host of suitors who had invaded the royal palace.

With the help of his father, Laertes, and his son, Telemachus, he slaughtered his rivals and re-established his rule.

But despite the fantastical details in the Greek epic, a team of archaeologists has claimed the tale is anchored in truth – and that they have discovered his home on the island of Ithaca, in the Ionian sea off the north-west coast of Greece.

Nearly 3,000 years after Odysseus returned from his journey, the team from the University of Ioannina said they found the remains of an extensive three-storey building, with steps carved out of rock and fragments of pottery. The complex also features and a well from the 8th century BC, roughly the period in which Odysseus is believed to have been king of Ithaca.

The location “fits like a glove” with Homer’s description of the view from the fabled palace, the archaeologists claim.

The layout of the complex, where Professor Thanassis Papadopoulos and his team have been digging for 16 years, is very similar to palaces discovered at Mycenae, Pylos and other ancient sites.

The claim will be greeted with scepticism by the many scholars who believe that Odysseus, along with other key characters from the Homer’s epic such as Hector and Achilles, were purely fictional.

“Whether this find has a connection with Ulysses or not is interesting up to a certain point, but more important is the discovery of the royal palace,” said Adriano La Regina, an Italian archaeologist.

Further complicating the identification of the site is the doubt over whether the ancient kingdom of Ithaca was located on its modern day namesake, Ithaki.

A British researcher, Robert Bittlestone, has said Homer’s descriptions bear little resemblance to the island and that ancient Ithaca was in fact located on the Paliki peninsula, on the island of Cephalonia.

He believes that Paliki was once an island, separated from the rest of Cephalonia by a marine channel that has since been filled in by rock falls triggered by earthquakes.

Enlisting the help of geologists and ancient historians, he documented the controversial theory in a 2005 book, Odysseus Unbound – The Search for Homer’s Ithaca.

Like I said last night, the plan is incredibly clever. However, it is clear that it will only really work if it is seriously about tweaking religious persecution of homosexuals and not just about pissing off a bunch of Muslims. Some of our incredibly astute commenters have pointed out in the still going debate on that post that New York’s gays aren’t going to flock to this bar just to be a part of some Fox News guy’s beef with a mosque no matter how good the music is (and Gutfeld promises it will be great). This is going to have to work as a provocation and a business.

The different ways this can play out were made clear by the reactions of Gutfeld’s guests. As funny a guy as Jim Norton is, it’s clear he’s just into this for the sake of annoying the mosque’s planners and not about making any kind of stand on gay rights. And, while John Gibson’s concern for the safety of Gutfeld’s patrons is certainly justified, his genuine fear that they will be butchered within a community center (and not just, perhaps, by someone who has frequented it) seems pretty insensitive.

It might seem silly to try and hold Gutfeld’s idea to such a high standard, but he can do something really interesting here. He’s basically accusing the people behind the mosque in lower Manhattan of having ulterior motives than their claims of “tolerance.” If he wants to really critique them, he should make it clear that, while he obviously is trying to get under their skin, he is also honestly working for tolerance himself. Sure, that may not have been what Gutfeld originally planned, but he has a chance to do something really important here (a chance that “TV people” only get, say, once a career) and I hope he makes the most of it. Sheriff Garrett tracked down and shot dead Billy the Kid, aka William Bonney and several other aliases, in 1881 after the notorious gunslinger had killed two deputies while busting out of jail in Lincoln County. A couple of years earlier, the territorial governor, Lew Wallace, reportedly offered the Kid a pardon in connection with a murder charge he faced in return for his testimony against those involved in a bloody range war. But Wallace is said to have reneged on the promise.

Gov. Bill Richardson now is considering the possibility of pardoning the Kid. A spokeswoman for the governor told the El Paso Times that “right now we have nothing planned,” but Garrett’s family sent a letter to Richardson objecting that such a move would amount to a defamation of the lawman, according to The Associated Press.

“If Billy the Kid was living amongst us now, would you issue a pardon for someone who made his living as a thief and, more egregiously, who killed four law enforcement officers and numerous others?” the Garrett family wrote.

Richardson’s spokeswoman told the El Paso newspaper that the governor’s staff is trying to set up a meeting with Garrett’s family.

As is the case with much of what transpired in the Old West, the line separating legend and truth can be blurry. Some skeptics insist that someone other than Billy the Kid was killed by Garrett, and that he might have lived until 1950 in Texas under the name of “Brushy Bill” Roberts. And there are several numbers thrown around when it comes to toting up the outlaw’s victims.

The chairman of the El Paso County Historical Commission told the El Paso Times he opposes having the governor grant a pardon.
